Shags Run Training Outing

I headed down to Shags Run today for the afternoon with my sister Louisa.  Billy Gerwin had a free afternoon, so he volunteered to help me with some training aspects I was struggling with.  I have an electric collar, but am still learning to use it effectively.  Billy coached me throughout the afternoon as we worked a few practice birds.  I was pretty excited as I was using less electricity overall, but was handling Rye much more effectively than previously.

Brookville Fishing Report 12/21/14

Well about a week ago I got bilateral knee surgery. All I have really been doing is tying TONS of flies. This past weekend I decided that I needed to get out to fish or I would go crazy. So yesterday Nick and I fished for only a little bit over at Brookville Tailwaters in the evening. I was obviously restricted in my wading abilities and could only get to a small fraction of my "honey holes". Even though we were only able to fish two spots, we still did well.
A nice hungry brown!

Quail Hunting 12/15

Got out and did some quail hunting with my Dad on Monday.  We had a great time with a Shags Run setter named Mikey.  It was the first time I had hunted with Mikey and he did great: stayed close, listened well and held points like a pro.

Steelhead Alley Fishing Report 11/15-11/17

So this weekend Nick, Louis, and I (Alex) got up to do some steelhead fishing.  We had been trying to schedule a trip for a while and the stars finally aligned and our schedules matched.  Nick and Louis both hooked into their first steelhead.  It was a pretty cool sight and I think it's safe to say that they are now addicted too.

Gear Review: Filson Mesh Strap Vest #16022

I have been using this hunting vest for a about three seasons at this point.  It has been a great and versatile product.  I think it is one of the most popular hunting vests we sell.

Brookville Fishing Report 11/13/14

I had the opportunity to get over to Brookville Tailwaters yesterday and do some fishing.  Water was very high at 4.5ft and it was pretty chilly at 27 F and snowing.  The fish were there though.

Crazy flows. Water was ripping downstream.

Shags Run 11/11/14

I enjoyed my day off today down at Shags Run.  Rye and I did pretty good.  She is coming along nicely after several months of rest and maturing.  I only had a few birds put out.  We ended the day with a few quail, a nice cock pheasant and a chukar.  I hunted the morning period so I could beat the rain and wind.  The cover is still a bit thick, but it looks great and is very workable.

Woodcock hunting

I walked the Ohio woods yesterday with a hunting buddy in search of woodcock.  The morning was cool, overcast and just a bit of rain.  We flushed ten birds and bagged three.  The cover was very thick and my years of grouse hunting have taught me to shoot quick and instinctively if you even want to think about bagging a bird.

Simms Windstopper Fleece is Back!!

We are very excited to bring back the Simms Windstopper fleece. Years ago this was a shop favorite. It was a favorite for those who wanted a performance fleece with a different look than Patagonia. It is also a great layering piece since it is fairly thin and weatherproof.

Toyota 2000GT

The Toyota 2000GT is a limited-production, front-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seat, hardtop coupe grand tourer designed by Toyota in collaboration with Yamaha. First displayed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965, the 2000GT was manufactured under contract by Yahama between 1967 and 1970. In Japan, it was exclusive to Toyota's Japanese retail sales channel called Toyota Store.

The 2000GT made its most famous screen appearance in the 1967 James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, most of which was filmed in Japan. Even though the car was never commercially available as a convertible, two were made specially for the film.

rugby: Eagles vs. All Blacks in Chicago today

40 minutes
wow; we all know the Kiwi's can play great rugby, but.....
it is half time and here is the score
All Blacks 43
Eagles 6

48:25
just saw the All Blacks score another Try
53-6
I think the most common thing I am seeing is the speed of game that All Blacks play; they keep the ball moving always

50:12
the All Blacks missed another extra point and it reminds me how good Jonny Wilkinson was; amazing scorer

72:50
All Blacks 67 - Eagles 6
why are the All Blacks so good?   the All Blacks always have a man running behind the ball carrier.
they can just pass the ball to an area and know that a player will appear to get the pass.

79:08
what passing!
great execution!
All Blacks 72 - Eagles 6

Final
All Blacks 74 - Eagles 6

doves on the grill

Monday night we threw 35 doves on the grill.  We did a quick sauce to brush on: olive oil, garlic, pepper and onion salt.  Zand made some cornmeal biscuits and we had our favorite honey from Cynthiana.  Finger-licking good!

I brought leftovers to the shop on Tuesday and I think I liked them better the next day cold.

Bird Hunting 10/28

I've been waiting all summer to spend some time hunting with Rye. Though it is still a bit early in the season, I headed down to Shags Run to get Rye into some birds. I didn't take too many pictures since I was shooting and working with Rye. We beat the rain and had a fun morning.

The Barbour Men's Northolt Waxed Jacket - weatherproof, parka style waxed cotton jacket.

Winter ready, the Barbour Northolt Jacket is 100% waxed cotton, featuring a fleece and quilt lined interior, plenty of pockets, and an attached hood.
From the Great Coat collection, the Northolt is a military-inspired men’s wax parka that offers robust protection and a rugged appearance.

Michigan Grouse Trip

Dad and I took a long weekend to kick off the upland season with  trip to northern Michigan for grouse.  We flushed grouse and woodcock every day and even though we all got some shots, we finished the trip empty handed.  I can say I probably learned more about grouse hunting this trip than ever before.

New Rod on the wall!

Pete using my 11 footer in Montana
We just brought in a Sage One 10' 5-weight. This is why:

While I was in Montana, my group did a lot of nymph fishing which gave us the opportunity to fish many different rods. The guides and I all came equipped with specialty nymphing rods. These rods are generally 9'6" or longer. 10' and 11' are standard for this type of fishing. Most of my group had never used these longer rods before, but by the end of trip they were true believers.

Brookville Fishing Report

Nick and I got out to Brookville a couple nights ago and camped. We fished all throughout the night, slept for a couple hours, and fished the morning. The water was low-- 2.7 ft. Weather was rainy and cold, but the fish came out. I set a new record for myself and hooked into a true beast. It was a 27 inch brown trout that had crazy girth. It made it even more cool that it was at midnight.

A true monster. Couldn't even fit a hand around him.

Local Musky Fishing

Got out today and fished a fairly local river that is said to hold a very healthy population of musky. Didn't catch any musky, but the water looked like their perfect habitat. This also gave us a chance to get the drift boat out before we head up to the Au Sable in a few weeks and fish trout.

Montana Trip 2014

I just rolled in from Montana last night. It was a great trip. We had very good water conditions and willing fish. The folks at Upper Canyon Outfitters make this trip so easy and enjoyable for the whole group.

D&H adds a new color to the range of Filson Alaskan shirts

The Alaskan shirt has been a favorite of the gents working at Delamere & Hopkins for many years.  With the cooler weather starting to set in, we have just unpacked a shipment from Filson that included many Alaskan shirts along with the newest color addition to the D&H range: green and black.
This shirt is constructed from a 7oz cotton flannel and you can tell the minute your hand touches the fabric that this is a shirt like no other.  I find that if you wash and then hang the shirt to dry on a broad hanger, it will look like new for many years.

Stop in the Hyde Park Square shop and examine this shirt for yourself.  If you are not able to make it into the Cincinnati shop, visit our web site to read more about one of my favorite autumn/winter shirts: BestGear.com.

the other colors we offer are shown below

Mid-Trip in Montana

We are several days into our trip to Upper Canyon Outfitters in Alder, Montana.  It has been a great trip.  Everyone has caught fish and I feel, become better fishermen.  I have a great group with a lot of variety.

We have seen plenty of wildlife everyday.  Antelope, elk, deer, Sandhill cranes just to name a few.

I spent the first two days assisting the guides as we fished some incredible water on both the Upper and Lower Ruby.  Yesterday, some of the group joined me for a short ride up the bluff above the ranch.  Here are a few pictures from the last few days.  I'll get more up when I come home.

Filson Original Sportsman Bag 70266: D&H bought all they had

This is the Filson Sportsman Bag in tan, style 70266.  This is a great field bag for all your sporting needs.  Your shooting bag is filled and organized in your gear room and ready to go at a moments notice.
As you head into the dove fields, you have everything you need: 20 gauge shells, shooting glasses, shooting gloves, Swiss Army multi-tool, silicone cloth, couple of granola bars and a couple of other "can't live without" items.
Duck blind, shooting range, back of truck essentials bag, field trial dog supplies bag...this is the bag that will stand the test of time.

The one thing to take note about this bag is that Filson just announced that they stopped making it in tan.  What?? (they now only make it in black.  ??)
The minute D&H heard this we called up the factory and told them to ship every style 70266 in tan that they had to Hyde Park Square.  We just received 17 bags in the shop.
