Weekend Trip to the South Holston River

This past weekend I headed down to the South Holston River Lodge in Tennessee for a weekend fishing trip with my good friend Liam and our mothers'.  We arrived Friday night and settled into the riverside lodge and were quite impressed with the accommodations of the Mayfly cabin.  We spent Friday night getting our gear in order and were excited for our 6:30am wake up call.

Michigan Trout Fishing

Last weekend my dad and I got up to do some trout fishing in Northern Michigan. We fished the Pere Marquette for two days and the Au Sable for two days. This time of year the east side and west side offer very different experiences; streamers vs. eggs. It was awesome....

Local Trout Update 9/7/15

Ted and I got out to do some night fishing (mousing) for some trout the other night. We fished with rodents in hand until the sun came up. We fished the morning for a brief period and then went home to sleep... giant Stanley Thermos' filled with coffee can only last so long. We had a solid time.

Local Trout Update

Got out with my buddy Lou a few days ago to do a trout float. Turned out to be one heck of a day.

South Holston River Lodge Trip Report

Several years ago the folks down at the South Holston River Lodge invited D&H down to visit and try out their operation. When the opportunity to plan a trip came up this spring, I jumped on it. To say the least, I was impressed by the whole experience.

The fishing was great and the lodge and staff were wonderful.

Brookville Fishing Report

I finally got out to Brookville Tailwaters for the first time in two months.  It was packed because it was the trout opener.  The water dropped from 3.7ft down to 2.9ft while we were over there.  It rained HARD all day.

Northern Michigan Trout Fishing

Late last night I got back from four days fishing up on the AuSable River in Michigan. This is hands down my favorite place to go.  We took up the drift boat and did nothing but float chucking streamers tight to cover to find those big browns.  We floated the "Trophy Waters" below Mio Dam as well as the lower upper river.  It was another awesome trip back up to the mitt!

Brookville tailwater report 2-9-15

Got out with a friend on Monday and did pretty well.  The morning started out slow;  temps were in the low 30's and the windchill made it feel like the low teens.  We ended up catching four fish in a half-day fishing.

Montana Trip 2014

I just rolled in from Montana last night. It was a great trip. We had very good water conditions and willing fish. The folks at Upper Canyon Outfitters make this trip so easy and enjoyable for the whole group.

Mid-Trip in Montana

We are several days into our trip to Upper Canyon Outfitters in Alder, Montana.  It has been a great trip.  Everyone has caught fish and I feel, become better fishermen.  I have a great group with a lot of variety.

We have seen plenty of wildlife everyday.  Antelope, elk, deer, Sandhill cranes just to name a few.

I spent the first two days assisting the guides as we fished some incredible water on both the Upper and Lower Ruby.  Yesterday, some of the group joined me for a short ride up the bluff above the ranch.  Here are a few pictures from the last few days.  I'll get more up when I come home.

Mad River Fishing Report 8/24/14

This morning I was able to get up to the Mad River. Weather was nice and flows were good. We were able to bring some nice fish in over a couple hours.

This 18" didn't want my streamer in his territory.

Brookville Report 6/17

I took advantage of my day off today to do a little bit of fishing to prepare for a guide trip on Saturday.  I headed over to Brookville this morning about 6am to fish with a good friend.  The gauges have been reading the neighborhood of 2.66 gauge height the last few days.  A bit lower than I like, but great conditions for spotting and watching fish.  We spent a bit of time just watching trout midging on the flats.

West Virginia Adventure

Back in March, Chip and I got invited to the annual Buckeye United Fly Fishers banquet. During the banquet, I put a bid in on a trip to West Virginia for stay and fish at Elk Springs Resort (https://sites.google.com/site/elkspringsresortwv/) outside of Elkins, WV.
As a bit of an early birthday present/end of freshman year thing, I invited my youngest sister, Louisa, to come along.
We had a great time. The hatches this time of year were pretty amazing. The fishing was great, only problem was we we didn't stay long enough.

Brookville Fishing Report

I headed over to do some fishing in the early afternoon and fished into the late evening. I fished the first half of the day by myself and then hooked up with my dad for the second half. Fishing was great both parts of the day but the crowning moment was my new record brown trout. I picked up a 26" brown to beat my old record of a 24" out of Brookville. As far as the conditions went, the water was on the lower side at 2.8 ft. The water temps were in the low 50s and the sun was out for most of the afternoon and then it drizzled in the evening. The small stocker browns and bows were out in full swing as well.
