bass fishing in Michigan

Ben Hunting just sent us a photo of a bass he caught yesterday in Michigan on a Stay Hungry in chartreuse and white.  He was using a Sage bass rod.

Carp on the Fly
They say that carp are the freshwater bonefish, yesterday I tried my luck on the Little Miami river and it turned out pretty good.  I landed two carp; one was about 12 lbs and one was about 4 or 5. I hooked one quite a bit larger then these and it ran me out a ways, but all I was using was a 6wt and I lost her.  Find a mulberry tree and have some fun with a good fight.

Two Day Fly Fishing School

             Two Day Fly Fishing School

We just completed our first Two Day school at Briarwood sporting club in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Our four students had a busy weekend as they worked to improve their casting, learn their knots, and perfect their fishing abilities. Fishing was a little slow due to the temperature hovering in the 90's the whole time we were there.

Patagonia Deep Wading Jacket ON SALE

D&H has decided to stop carrying the Patagonia Deep Wading Jacket in our shop.  I really like this jacket and we have sold it for years, but it does not sell as well as some of the other models because of the length.  It is the proper length for fly fishing, but many customers want a length that they can wear around town also and this is a bit short for that.  The jacket has great features and if we have you size in stock I'm sure you will get years of service out of a great item from Patagonia.

fishing report: Elkhorn Creek

The weatherman said that big storms were expected to hit the Elkhorn area and the radar backed him up.  Our party decided to throw caution to the wind and head south anyway.  Luke and Mark fished with customer Joe Mohlenkamp.  When we got to the canoe livery they were stuck to the computer looking at the radar screen and sounding like no one should even step outdoors.  We decided to park and fish upstream from the canoe livery.

fishing report: Elkhorn Creek

                 Elkhorn Creek Update
A friend and I went down to the Elkhorn Creek yesterday to try our luck. The water level was great and the clarity was pretty good. We both caught quite a few fish, despite it being my first day on the creek this season. We started the day throwing Poppers and switched over to streamers about noon. Many more fish were caught on buggers, zonkers, and Meat Whistles. I have also heard other good reports recently.

Central Pennsylvania Trout Trip

                                Central Pennsylvania Trout Trip

Our group just returned from a few days of fishing in Central Pennsylvania. The fishing was great. We caught a bunch of Rainbow and Brown trout and a few of the guys caught Brook trout as well. Some of the guys landed the biggest fish of their fly fishing careers.

D&H is closed for Mother's Day

fishing report: Elkhorn Creek

I just received a phone-in report from a D&H customer about his fishing yesterday on the Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky.
The water was super clear and cool.  There was a large amount of moss floating down the stream and every cast he had to clean off his weighted streamers.  He switched to a non-weighted wooly bugger and started to get results.  The thing that surprised him the most was that he caught most of his fish and the best in unlikely spots.  He said the slower moving water that he never even looks at was the place to fish flies yesterday.
He caught a nice bass with a really large crayfish in its mouth.
The customer believed that the cool water changed how the creek was fishing and so he changed too.

new vendor: Hardy of England

Delamere & Hopkins is happy to announce that Hardy fly reels and rods have been added to the range of gear being offered in the Hyde Park Square shop.  Most fly anglers are familiar with the English fly fishing company that has been around since 1872.  Come in and take a look at traditional and forward-looking reels and ask to cast the rods.

fishing report: Pennsylvania

Luke just phoned in a fishing report from the banks of Big Fishing Creek in PA.  Our group of six anglers were gearing up with their three guides to head out for day two of the D&H Central PA Fishing Adventure.  The report from yesterday was that everyone caught fish and big fish.  No photos yet or details, but we will have Luke give a full report when he gets back to Cincinnati.

The dates for the Autumn PA trip are November 7-12, 2012.

new item: Filson Safari Cloth pants

We just received a shipment of the Safari Cloth pants from Filson a couple of days ago.  D&H actually carried these pants 15 years ago and I am not sure why we stopped stocking this style.  I guess the shop gets so full of merchandise and sometimes some styles get overlooked.

I wear my Mountain Khakis almost every day and really like them, but when I need a crisper looking pant I always turn to the Filson Safari Cloth.  The 6 oz cotton holds a crease well and looks good with a navy blue blazer for a wedding or just a nice shirt for a summer cocktail party.  When it is hot and humid, which is all summer in Cincinnati, and I need to look sharp, these are the pants I reach for.  They come unhemmed which I like so that I can have cuffs put on by Tony and Nick at Nobby Tailors on 7th Street.

Now that the weather is warming up, I will probably be wearing my Safari Cloth pants more often.  Now all I need are some fun summer party invites.

new item: Barbour Men's Enfield Jacket

The Enfield jacket is a lighter weight urban version of the classic motorcycle jacket.  The non-belted jacket is constructed of a waterproof wax cotton.  As with many of the urban jackets, the cut is a little slimmer than a traditional Barbour.  Stop in the shop and try one on.

Local Stream Report

                                                 Local Stream Report

Despite the rain over the weekend, Nick and I still managed to land a good amout of Smallmouth and Rock Bass at a local stream. The fish were loving the brown streamers, like the carp teaser and wooly bugger. Come in to D&H to pick up some Smallmouth flies!
