2016 Dove Shoots

 September 1st Thursday
September 4th Sunday
September 10th Saturday

This year D&H is having three shoots at our dove fields in Harrison County, KY.  The farm is family run and the fields are not commercially hunted.  Our fields have perfect habitat for Mourning Doves: rolling hills and abundant crops grown in fertile soil that are surrounded by hardwood forests.

We have expanded our plantings again this year and have many fields to shoot.  Our farmer planted more sunflowers and buckwheat this year.  The rain has been hitting the fields just as we want it and the fields look good.  We are going for a strong showing of sunflowers and buckwheat this year along with the normal food plots.  The farm also has available really nice roosting sites.

This is a wild bird shoot, so there are no guarantees as to the number of birds that will be present.  We are doing everything we can to ensure a lot of great food plots and ideal habitat to attract and hold birds.

Dove shooting…it can be fast!  Lots of talking in the field; calling out to your neighbor…

“Look behind you! Four coming in from the fencerow! Six coming in from the watering hole! Behind you! Behind you! What? Oh, behind me?”
"Luke you got the lucky spot.  I know it can’t be your shootin’ skills. Let me in there!”
“Hey Alan, you got any shells? How ‘bout a handful?”

New Fishing and Fly tying Books

Fly tying is a great craft for the avid angler to know as they are able to create a fly exactly how they would like it and use the fly tying gear that they would like to use. However, they will need a helping hand to master this trade.

The shop just received a few very helpful flying tying books:

Anyone interested in Striper fishing salt or freshwater owes it to themselves to take a look  at these books from Bob Popovics. Popovics is a dean of striper fishing and fly tying. His revolutionary flies have made a huge impact on modern striper fishing as well as other inshore species.

Any experienced fly fisherman was once a novice and they know that to get to where they are now it takes a lot of practice and a good guide.

Feeling Thirsty?

Nalgene bottles are perfect for a full day out or even a short walk. We have them in 32 oz. and 16 oz. sizes. They easily hold ice and have printed graduations so you can keep track of your hydration.
We like the 16 oz. size because they fit perfectly in our Fishpond and Patagonia fishing pack bottle holders. These bottles have been a staple of outdoors folks for years. They are just about unbreakable.
These bottles fit most water purifiers and filters, and make hand-washing a breeze.

Patagonia Black Hole Cubes

These handy gear holders have given us easy organized access to our gear no matter where we are headed.
A mini gear closet ready to organize essentials, the Patagonia Black Hole Cube is perfect as a dopp kit or a small organizer.
We brought in several colors. What a great gift to send a fisherman off on a trip or a college freshman to their first year. These accessories will see tons of use!

Patagonia Alpine Houdini Jacket

Although we really like and use the Patagonia Torrentshell Raincoat all the time, we still get many requests for a lighter weight waterproof coat. We think this might be the answer.
Featherweight, emergency storm protection for the neighborhood or a Bahamas flats boat. Stuff this jacket in your fishing pack, backpack, car for any pop-up storms or rain. A great summer jacket for Cincinnati summers.

New Patagonia Packs!

Ted and I got to take a look at some new Patagonia products the other day. It was great to see some of the items that will be here next spring as well as some current items we had overlooked in the past. With that in mind, we have a few new additions in the store.

We'll try to highlight a few of the new items over the next few days. One of the first things we noticed were a a few newer designs of backpacks.

The Paxat Pack

We liked the general versatility of this pack. We are carrying several different colors to suit anyone's taste. The large front pouch is an excellent place to stuff a sweatshirt or raincoat while out and about or while traveling. This is what Patagonia has to say:
"A versatile daypack with room for everything. TSA-compatible laptop compartment and various organizational pockets make it perfect for commuting or travel."

This mid-sized pack would a handy addition for anyone who is on-the-go all the time.

Summer Fishing

Danny just started with us a few months ago but is already showing promise. A great fish pic from some late evening fishing with poppers. Nice job!
