doves on the grill

Monday night we threw 35 doves on the grill.  We did a quick sauce to brush on: olive oil, garlic, pepper and onion salt.  Zand made some cornmeal biscuits and we had our favorite honey from Cynthiana.  Finger-licking good!

I brought leftovers to the shop on Tuesday and I think I liked them better the next day cold.

Bird Hunting 10/28

I've been waiting all summer to spend some time hunting with Rye. Though it is still a bit early in the season, I headed down to Shags Run to get Rye into some birds. I didn't take too many pictures since I was shooting and working with Rye. We beat the rain and had a fun morning.

Barbour Men's Northolt Waxed Jacket

The Barbour Men's Northolt Waxed Jacket - weatherproof, parka style waxed cotton jacket.

Winter ready, the Barbour Northolt Jacket is 100% waxed cotton, featuring a fleece and quilt lined interior, plenty of pockets, and an attached hood.
From the Great Coat collection, the Northolt is a military-inspired men’s wax parka that offers robust protection and a rugged appearance.

This hardy jacket is shaped for a relaxed, masculine fit and features an internal drawcord that allows adjustment for extra layers. The Sylkoil waxed cotton outer provides reliable protection with a stylish matte finish, and stud-fastening cuffs and a robust storm fly front stand firm against draughts. Classic parka styling influences the Northolt’s large fixed hood and longer length, while four utility-style outer pockets and brass stud fastenings nod to the collection’s military heritage. Inside, a fleece and quilt lining promises heavy-duty warmth.

The bag in the photo above is the new Leather Holdall and it is a great piece of leather.
If you are in the Cincinnati area, stop in Delamere & Hopkins to try on this great parka.  If you can't make it to Hyde Park Square, visit our on-line shop at BestGear.com.

Michigan Grouse Trip

Dad and I took a long weekend to kick off the upland season with  trip to northern Michigan for grouse.  We flushed grouse and woodcock every day and even though we all got some shots, we finished the trip empty handed.  I can say I probably learned more about grouse hunting this trip than ever before.

New Rod on the wall!

Pete using my 11 footer in Montana
We just brought in a Sage One 10' 5-weight. This is why:

While I was in Montana, my group did a lot of nymph fishing which gave us the opportunity to fish many different rods. The guides and I all came equipped with specialty nymphing rods. These rods are generally 9'6" or longer. 10' and 11' are standard for this type of fishing. Most of my group had never used these longer rods before, but by the end of trip they were true believers.

Brookville Fishing Report

Nick and I got out to Brookville a couple nights ago and camped. We fished all throughout the night, slept for a couple hours, and fished the morning. The water was low-- 2.7 ft. Weather was rainy and cold, but the fish came out. I set a new record for myself and hooked into a true beast. It was a 27 inch brown trout that had crazy girth. It made it even more cool that it was at midnight.

A true monster. Couldn't even fit a hand around him.
