Flats fishing in Michigan

I just got back from a family trip to Michigan. A friend generously invited me to come along on a guided trip for some Lake Michigan flats for smallmouth and carp. Unfortunately, the fish did not cooperate, but the fishing was on of the most unique fishing experiences I have had in a long time. We fished with Capt. Ethan Winchester from Boyne Outfitters, near Boyne, Michigan. He was an excellent guide and persisted in the face of a tough day. Check out the pics below for more...

Ethan took us to a spot in Northern Michigan where a huge point just out into Lake Michigan. The end of the point is actually a series of small islands that create a huge patchwork of freshwater flats. The pictures really don't do the scene justice. As far as we could see just about were pools surrounded by tons of structure. The plan was to cast to many of the rocks and any darker/deeper water. We caught a few mid size fish. I can't wait to try it again. It was a pretty physically strenuous day, but was really worth it.
