Brookville Fishing Report

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of fishing with Dale Fallat at Brookville. Dale was a bit new to the sport, but seemed to really enjoy the process and experience.  Fishing was a bit tough, but Dale was a trooper.  Water was very low; maybe 2 feet.  Some of the places I know usually hold fish were almost out of water.  After some trial and error, we found a spot where many trout were stacked up and looked like they were feeding on midges. (There were several 18+ fish sitting in this spot).
I switched the rig to a dry-dropper rig with a very light, red chironomid and within a few casts we were into a nice Brown trout.  I did not realize it at the time, but not only was it Dale's first trout on the fly, it was his first fish on the fly!

Brookville Fishing Report

I got out to Brookville Tailwaters and did extremely well.  The fish just seemed to be on.  I picked up many nice holdover browns including a healthy 23" fish as well as some rainbows.

Such a pretty 23 inch Brookville Tailwaters brown trout

Brookville Fishing Report

I finally got out to Brookville Tailwaters for the first time in two months.  It was packed because it was the trout opener.  The water dropped from 3.7ft down to 2.9ft while we were over there.  It rained HARD all day.

Brookville Fishing Report 2/25/15

It's been while since I've been over to Brookville Tailwaters and also put up a fishing report.  I found some time today to get out and did well.

A pretty sight

Brookville tailwater report 2-9-15

Got out with a friend on Monday and did pretty well.  The morning started out slow;  temps were in the low 30's and the windchill made it feel like the low teens.  We ended up catching four fish in a half-day fishing.

Brookville Fishing Report 12/21/14

Well about a week ago I got bilateral knee surgery. All I have really been doing is tying TONS of flies. This past weekend I decided that I needed to get out to fish or I would go crazy. So yesterday Nick and I fished for only a little bit over at Brookville Tailwaters in the evening. I was obviously restricted in my wading abilities and could only get to a small fraction of my "honey holes". Even though we were only able to fish two spots, we still did well.
A nice hungry brown!

Brookville Fishing Report 11/13/14

I had the opportunity to get over to Brookville Tailwaters yesterday and do some fishing.  Water was very high at 4.5ft and it was pretty chilly at 27 F and snowing.  The fish were there though.

Crazy flows. Water was ripping downstream.

New Rod on the wall!

Pete using my 11 footer in Montana
We just brought in a Sage One 10' 5-weight. This is why:

While I was in Montana, my group did a lot of nymph fishing which gave us the opportunity to fish many different rods. The guides and I all came equipped with specialty nymphing rods. These rods are generally 9'6" or longer. 10' and 11' are standard for this type of fishing. Most of my group had never used these longer rods before, but by the end of trip they were true believers.

Brookville Fishing Report

Nick and I got out to Brookville a couple nights ago and camped. We fished all throughout the night, slept for a couple hours, and fished the morning. The water was low-- 2.7 ft. Weather was rainy and cold, but the fish came out. I set a new record for myself and hooked into a true beast. It was a 27 inch brown trout that had crazy girth. It made it even more cool that it was at midnight.

A true monster. Couldn't even fit a hand around him.

Brookville Fishing Report 8/31/14

My dad and I got out to Brookville for a little bit this morning and afternoon. The water was at a good level (3.2 and then got bumped up to 3.5ft). The rain kept the people in and brought the fish out!

Brookville Fishing Report 6/19/14

Brookville has been on fire recently.  The flows have been good as well as the weather.  I headed over on Thursday to give it a shot.  The gauge was around 2.9, so a little low.  Water clarity was very good and it was bright and sunny.  I must have picked up 30 fish throughout the morning and afternoon.

Size doesn't always make a nice fish.

Brookville Report 6/17

I took advantage of my day off today to do a little bit of fishing to prepare for a guide trip on Saturday.  I headed over to Brookville this morning about 6am to fish with a good friend.  The gauges have been reading the neighborhood of 2.66 gauge height the last few days.  A bit lower than I like, but great conditions for spotting and watching fish.  We spent a bit of time just watching trout midging on the flats.

Brookville Fishing Report

I headed over to do some fishing in the early afternoon and fished into the late evening. I fished the first half of the day by myself and then hooked up with my dad for the second half. Fishing was great both parts of the day but the crowning moment was my new record brown trout. I picked up a 26" brown to beat my old record of a 24" out of Brookville. As far as the conditions went, the water was on the lower side at 2.8 ft. The water temps were in the low 50s and the sun was out for most of the afternoon and then it drizzled in the evening. The small stocker browns and bows were out in full swing as well.

Brookville Fishing Report 5/26/14

Between high waters and working a lot at the shop, I haven't gotten to fish in about two weeks. I headed over to Brookville this morning through the afternoon with the family for a picnic. Obviously I really didn't eat much and spent the time fishing. The weather was very good, almost too good. The sun was bright and the sky clear. The flows were perfect with a gauge height of 3.71 ft. The water was very clear too due to nice constant flows for some time. I picked up a lot of nice rainbows and browns.

Brookville Fishing Report 3/9/14

Spring is upon us!  The weather has been very nice the past few days and continues to look good into the week.  This is my favorite time of year to fish.  Trout are on the prowl after a long cold winter, tons of steelhead are in the rivers to the north, and warm water fishing is just about to get good.  Brookville this past weekend proved no exception.  The water was at a perfect level of 3.3ft, air temperatures were awesome, but most importantly the fish were feeding.  Water temperatures will still take some time to warm up though.

Brookville Fishing Report 11/26/13

Nick and I headed out to Brookville this morning for some streamer fishing. The water was the highest that either of us had ever fished it before. The gauge was registering the depth at about 4.7 ft. With this said we both threw on heavy flies with heavy sinking tips and sink lines. In conditions like this, use about three feet of 10 lb Rio saltwater fluorocarbon for the leader. The whole day Nick and I fished slow and deep. We were both using an Olive Zuddler streamer variation. Using this fly, I hooked into a beast of a brown trout. He hit the 24" mark on the measuring tape.

New Flies at the Shop

Delamere & Hopkins just received our first shipment of flies from Catch Fly Fishing today. Catch is a fly company based out of Billings, Montana. They tie a variety of patterns both large and small. Our first order reflected this. I made this order with winter fishing at Brookville and on the Mad in mind. Here's a sneak peak at some of what came in.  Stop in the Hyde Park Square shop on take a look at the new patterns.

Brookville Fishing Report 10/25/13

Winter is fast approaching and the fish know it. The fish are in feeding mode, looking for any type of easy meal. Right now Brookville is a little high at 3.88 ft. This might not be ideal nymphing conditions, but it is an awesome time to throw some streamers. After two weeks of mid-terms, I decided what better way to unwind than to pick up a fly rod.

Brookville/Whitewater Fishing Reports 6/26/13

Yesterday Louis, Nick, and I came up with a plan to fish Brookville Tailwaters in the morning for trout and then the Whitewater River in the afternoon for smallmouth.  Brookville is pretty familiar to us so were pretty excited to try some new water and the Whitewater did not dissapoint.

Winter Fishing at Brookville Tailwater

Late Sunday afternoon, I got a call from a friend coming into town who wanted to fish.  He, Chip, and I have spent many hours fishing over at Brookville tailwater together (and Brookville is kinda the only game in town right now), so it was an easy choice on where to fish.  The weather was kinda dreary with flurries all day, steel gray skies and light winds.  Temps stayed around the high 30's all day.
