Backroom Sale Tweed Jacket

The Origin of Tweed

It is commonly thought that tweed emerged in Scotland and Ireland as a way for the farmers there to battle the chilly, damp climate that characterizes those parts. Tweed began as a hand woven fabric. The cloth was rough, thick, and felted and the colors were muted and earthy.  It was truly a working man's cloth. As far as the name goes, there are a couple of theories.
  1. There is a River Tweed in Scotland and the cloth was made in the Tweed Valley, and some believe that is the origin of the word.
  2. A more popular legend has it that the name tweed is a twist on the Scottish word for "tweel" or twill in our parlance, which is the signature weave of the fabric.  It is said that in 1826, a London clerk accidentally transcribed an order to "tweel" and wrote "tweed" instead, and from there the name came into use.
Whatever the origin, tweed is a rugged fabric, resistant to wind and water with excellent insulating properties.

Barbour Danby Sweater

The Danby is a waterproof sweater that is built to handle the rigors of being in the field, but also would look good in town.  The 100% lambswool knit has a olive tweed look.  The front chest zipped pocket is perfect for a money clip, the winning ticket at the track or a cell phone.  This is one good looking cardigan sweater that won't make you look like your ready to go out-to-pasture.

The weather in Cincinnati has been up and down over the last few weeks.  We have not hit parka weather yet, but we definitely have had plenty of temperatures to warrant a vest.  We thought we would take a look at the selection of vests we have in the shop; some new styles and some old favorites.  If you have any questions, stop in the shop, try some on and feel free to ask questions.

Barbour Colwarmth
Barbour Colwarmth Vest
This is a new style from the Barbour Field Collection for the 2015 cold weather season.  We took to this vest because it is not too puffy and bulky and will look as good in the field as it will going into town to get supplies.  The vest is filled with a Fibre Down that keeps you warm even it gets wet and dries quickly.  Microfiber suede is used on the inner collar and on the quilted patches.  There is an inner zipped security pocket.  The color of the vest is a little bit more olive than the photo shows (if you click here and go to our web site, the image on our site shows the true color).

new items in the shop: Barbour Men's Leedale Jacket

The Barbour Men's Leedale Waxed Jacket - from the Hacking collection, the Leedale reworks Barbour’s iconic Bedale jacket in a heavyweight 8oz Oban wax, for uncompromising winter protection.A new take on the original, the Leedale preserves the Bedale's trademark equestrian styling, relaxed fit, smart sit-down collar and moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets, but gives the classic theme a new interpretation.

A stylish Tattersall lining (shown in the pictures) is inspired by Barbour’s equestrian heritage and adds an eye-catching element, while the collar is a luxurious combination of wool and traditional corduroy. This gives the Leedale exceptional warmth and an incredibly soft feel against the skin – especially when raised and secured with the buckle-fastening collar strap. Another great feature is the easy slide in sleeves - no catching your sweater or shirt on the lining!

Retaining the Bedale’s renowned functionality, the Leedale features a two-way front zip with Barbour branded ring pull, a storm fly front with robust snap fastenings, generous bellow pockets and underarm eyelets for ventilation. Designed for those who are active outdoors, this hardy men's waxed jacket is the perfect winter companion.
Stop in the Cincinnati shop and try one this great looking jacket.

Barbour Peel Jacket

As the weather is starting to get warmer, I have been reaching in the coat closet and looking for lighter options.  One of my favorite is a Barbour waterproof/breathable Bedale jacket from many years back.  I am always amazed how light and breathable this jacket is.  I wear a number of Patagonia shells and fishing jackets and they are great, but when I want to hit the streets and be a bit dressier, this is my jacket of choice.

This year Barbour has come out with a new version of my old jacket.  The technology has been updated and the jacket is being offered in three colors.  Stop in the shop on Hyde Park Square and try one on.  If you are not in Cincinnati, you can go on the Delamere & Hopkins' e-commerce site and we will ship the jacket to you:  http://www.bestgear.com/barbour+mens+peel+waterproof+jacket+2

Barbour wading jacket

This is a page from the 1994 Barbour catalog.  Delamere & Hopkins carried this wading jacket and it was short.  The funny thing is that I think we sold as many to women for fashion as we did anglers.

Skyfall: James Bond film review

I went to see the new James Bond film last night and I feel that a full film review is in order.
I was surprised that the director decided to give us the best right away and not hold anything back.  Money Penny drove a Land Rover 110 Double Cab Pick Up in the first chase scene and there were many things about this scene which made it the best in the movie.  First it was long.  It gave the viewer plenty of time to admire and lust over the Rover.  The Double Cab Pick Up is a great vehicle that we do not get to see on the streets in the States (this is a travesty).  Of course the chase was dangerous with all of the tight urban streets of Istanbul, but Money Penny had no problem behind the wheel of her Rover and all of the bullets hitting the Rover did not stop it.  We then had to endure a break in the action while the bad guy and Bond played around on some motorcycles.  Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against motorcycles, but let's face it, they were not made by Land Rover and isn't this just a bit of a waste of film?  Back to the real action, the guys get rid of the moto chase thing and jump on a train.  A train you say.  Not made by Rover?  Waste of film?  No.  The Rover is driving along with the train and having to dodge VW cars as they fall off the train.  At the end of the long chase Money Penny finally makes her big blunder and stops the Rover and gets out and well there is nothing left to say except for she is no longer driving a Rover.
