first trip to the Elkhorn this season

Four us from the shop ran down to the Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky on Friday.  Water level was perfect, but I think the water temperature was a little on the cool side.  Fishing was fine, but the smallies were not slamming the top water.  I found that the biggest fish were hanging in the sunny areas along the banks.  A lot of my normal spots did not produce, but I had success in some new areas.
I landed about 25-30 fish, with only a few dinks in the bunch.  One smallie slammed my bugger the minute it hit the water.

I picked up eight smallies below this riffle section.  One was the nicest of the day for me; he was sitting on the bank in the bright sun.

we rented a canoe from Canoe Kentucky and floated about a six mile stretch

I fished the Elkhorn on Thursday the 9th and the water level and clarity was the best of the season.  We caught a bunch of fish and some of size.  We caught some on a bead head rubber leg brown wooly bugger, but most and the biggest were caught on chartreuse poppers.  Check out all the photos.

Elkhorn Creek fishing report

We fished the Elkhorn on Thursday and the conditions were perfect.  This was the first time I have hit the stream since the awful drought that shut down pretty much everything.  The water level and clarity were both good.  We caught fish on both Dixie Devils and subsurface flies. 

Father’s Day and Elkhorn Report

Wow, what a busy weekend!

Late last week Andrew Bowen from Key Bank invited me to a charity sporting clays shoot at Elk Creek Sporting Club and Vineyard. The event was a partnership between Key Private Bank and the Marvin Lewis Community fund. The proceeds went to support some of the Community Fund’s signature programs. The shooters were joined by a few current Bengal players. I was lucky enough to be assigned to shoot with Bengals’ Offensive Lineman, Matt O’Donnell. I couldn’t have been paired with a nicer, more down-to-earth guy. Also as a new shooter, he shot very well and helped the team average out. If you haven’t visited Elk Creek in a while, you owe it to yourself to explore the club. The sporting clays courses are first class and the restaurant and winery are extremely nice.

fishing report: Elkhorn Creek

The weatherman said that big storms were expected to hit the Elkhorn area and the radar backed him up.  Our party decided to throw caution to the wind and head south anyway.  Luke and Mark fished with customer Joe Mohlenkamp.  When we got to the canoe livery they were stuck to the computer looking at the radar screen and sounding like no one should even step outdoors.  We decided to park and fish upstream from the canoe livery.

                 Elkhorn Creek Update
      A friend and I went down to the Elkhorn Creek yesterday to try our luck. The water level was great and the clarity was pretty good. We both caught quite a few fish, despite it being my first day on the creek this season. We started the day throwing Poppers and switched over to streamers about noon. Many more fish were caught on buggers, zonkers, and Meat Whistles. I have also heard other good reports recently.
