Warm water flies and materials

D&H is always getting new flies and materials to keep things interesting. With the high water its a great time to start tying some new flies and trying out new materials. We just unpacked a couple shipments with a couple new things and some things we have been out of.

My Sunday - Hunting & Tying

Despite the snow, my Dad and I decided to go out and do some bird hunting.  We had this day on the calendar for a while and didn't want to re-schedule.  It ended up being one of the most exciting hunts I've had.  Since the snow was a little frozen on the top, the birds couldn't burrow like they would have liked and they did a lot of running and moving around.  We hunted Mike, who is a Shags Run setter and he did great.  Mike has a great nose, listens well and tracked the birds fantastically. After the cold morning, I came home and continued to stock my spring fly box with some bait-fish patterns for the Hybrid Bass.  It was a good day.  Enjoy the pictures!

If you look closely at this picture you can see the dog (on the right) and the bird half way up on the far left.

Hybrid update

Got out the last few days and fished for some smallmouth and hybrid striper's. I have had some success fishing at a few of the different access points from Milford down river to the mouth where it flows into the Ohio. Big bait fish patterns have done well for the hybrids even though i haven't seen a huge presence of shad or skipjack yet as I think everything has been pushed back due to the long, never ending winter we had.  I would expect to see more bait coming in as these water temperatures continue to rise, which will help turn the fishing on a bit more.

Hybrid Report

A few of us got out this morning. Water is still a bit high due to East Fork tailwater running a bit high. Make sure and check gauges for the Little Miami as well as East fork tailwater.  Enjoy.

Little Miami Hybrid Fishing

Fortunately, I have had some time to fish the last couple days. All of us at the shop have been hitting it pretty hard. I have fished every day so far since the 3rd in a few different spots and the little Miami has been on fire! All together I’ve caught two hybrids; the bigger of the two was around 8 lbs, some decent white bass, half a dozen respectable Smallmouth and one Largemouth in the mix! The Gizzard Shad are definitely around and in huge numbers, you can sense the fish can feel it and are excited about it.

Carp on the Fly
They say that carp are the freshwater bonefish, yesterday I tried my luck on the Little Miami river and it turned out pretty good.  I landed two carp; one was about 12 lbs and one was about 4 or 5. I hooked one quite a bit larger then these and it ran me out a ways, but all I was using was a 6wt and I lost her.  Find a mulberry tree and have some fun with a good fight.
