Hunting at Arrowhead Pheasants

       I've been wanting to try out some new hunt clubs lately, so I jumped on the chance to hunt with an old friend and his dog at Arrowhead near Wilmington, OH.  It doesn't really compare to Shags Run, but it is a nice place and a good alternative.

   The last few times I have been out didn't warrant full reports but thought you all would enjoy some of the pictures from those days. I feel grateful to hunt with many close friends and family. Rye has had a very successful season and is getting to be a hell of a dog which makes it all worth it.

Shags Run Hunting Pics

     I headed down to Shags today for my day off to hunt alone with Rye. We did pretty well. We killed  about 8 birds and missed a few more. My shooting was less than impressive today. Once the birds hit the wind on the ridges, the birds got moving fast. The Tennnessee Reds are always fast anyways.

    Billy has me hunting in style these days. he picked this toy up a few months ago. It has made a huge difference in transporting dogs and hunters around the farm.

Pheasant Hunting in South Dakota

        A few weeks back my dad came up with a plan to take a long weekend trip to South Dakota to pheasant hunt.  Ever since my dad did a few of these trips when I was in grade school, I have always wanted to experience South Dakota pheasant.  We had a great trip.  We had a great group of guys that made hunting safe and enjoyable and were lots of fun once the hunting was done for the day.  Check below to see the rest of trip.

Opening Day at Shags

   A few friends and I headed down to Shags Run for our first hunt of the year on November 1st. The farm has excellent cover this year. There is still quite a bit of green but the dogs did well enough for early season. I ran Rye with Tana, a springer, for the first hour or more and then switched to one of Billy's dogs for the remainder of the day.

Opening day of Woodcock Season

   Today was the first true day of bird season around here. It is a bit early, but Rye and I headed out anyway and had a great time exploring Indian Creek Wildlife Area.  Indian Creek is really a great resource for all of us Cincinnati sportsmen and women.  You will find a map here:Indian Creek Wildlife Area

Early Season Dog Training

     While Dove hunting on a state wildlife area a few weeks ago, Louis and I stumbled upon a small covey of Bobwhite quail.  Quail used to be one of the staple wildlife species around here, but due to depredation, farming practices and habitat changes, the covey's are few and far between these days.  I don't intend to hunt this covey, but immediately was excited about the possibility of letting my dog work these birds.
     I had Saturday off with no commitments and the weather was a bit overcast.  It was a perfect day to take Rye out to the fields.  I invited my friend Josh and his Springer Spaniel "Tana" to join us since we often hunt together.

Rye didn't stop all morning. Part of the reason this is the only picture she made it into.

Sunday in the Field

     Headed down to Shags Run today to host and help guide a small group.  Rye has become a pretty dependable bird dog.  I also got to see Buck and Voodoo work.  Lots of fun to see multiple dogs work.  I always feel like I learn something from Billy.

My Sunday - Hunting & Tying

   Despite the snow, my Dad and I decided to go out and do some bird hunting.  We had this day on the calendar for a while and didn't want to re-schedule.  It ended up being one of the most exciting hunts I've had.  Since the snow was a little frozen on the top, the birds couldn't burrow like they would have liked and they did a lot of running and moving around.  We hunted Mike, who is a Shags Run setter and he did great.  Mike has a great nose, listens well and tracked the birds fantastically. After the cold morning, I came home and continued to stock my spring fly box with some bait-fish patterns for the Hybrid Bass.  It was a good day.  Enjoy the pictures!

Bird Hunting with Friends

    This year has been a ton of fun.  Rye has progressed so well and is hunting a lot like a mature dog at this point despite being a year and half old.  She has a many lessons to learn, but we have accomplished a lot.  One of the best things about hunting this year has been the chance to hunt with many different friends.  I am really proud whenever I can share Shags Run with new people.

Shags Run Training Outing

         I headed down to Shags Run today for the afternoon with my sister Louisa.  Billy Gerwin had a free afternoon, so he volunteered to help me with some training aspects I was struggling with.  I have an electric collar, but am still learning to use it effectively.  Billy coached me throughout the afternoon as we worked a few practice birds.  I was pretty excited as I was using less electricity overall, but was handling Rye much more effectively than previously.

Quail Hunting 12/15

      Got out and did some quail hunting with my Dad on Monday.  We had a great time with a Shags Run setter named Mikey.  It was the first time I had hunted with Mikey and he did great: stayed close, listened well and held points like a pro.

Bird Hunting 10/28

I've been waiting all summer to spend some time hunting with Rye. Though it is still a bit early in the season, I headed down to Shags Run to get Rye into some birds. I didn't take too many pictures since I was shooting and working with Rye. We beat the rain and had a fun morning.

Michigan Grouse Trip

    Dad and I took a long weekend to kick off the upland season with  trip to northern Michigan for grouse.  We flushed grouse and woodcock every day and even though we all got some shots, we finished the trip empty handed.  I can say I probably learned more about grouse hunting this trip than ever before.

September 1st Dove Shoot Report

       We had a great dove shoot at Shags Run yesterday. It was some of the most consistent shooting I have ever seen there. We started shooting around 2:00 and from beginning to end everyone had shots. Billy's fields were in great shape full of sunflowers, milo, sorghum, and Egyptian wheat.

Shags Run Visit and Dove field Report

       Louis and I took advantage of our day off and headed down to Shags Run to visit with Billy Gerwin, check out the new puppies, and take a look at the dove fields. Shags Run has been our gracious host for September dove shoots and upland hunts the last few years.

       The dove fields looked great with tons of sunflowers and buckwheat planted.  Billy has planted more fields with more food this then year any previous years.  He will be starting to cut hay soon which he says always brings birds in.  Even just hanging around the barnyard, I noticed birds working the fields and hanging around the farm.


 Of course we really went to see the puppies. They are approximately 6 weeks old. Click "read more" to see all the pictures.
