Bonefish Trivia

 

       As our summer fishing season begins to wind down, we start planning for some tropical bonefishing in the Bahamas. Here are a few things you may not know about Bones:

• Bonefish are named for their many fin bones
• Bones inhabit many parts of the world, including the Bahamas, Florida, Mexico, Belize, and Christmas Island
• Fish may weigh up to 19 pounds and may grow to be 35 inches long
• Fish mature at 3-4 years at which point they may be 17-19 inches long. They can live to be 24 years old.

• Several different species of Bonefish inhabit the world. Florida is home to several different species.
• Bonefish have an average speed of 40 MPH.
• May feed on aquatic worms, crustaceans, and mollusks

Most bonefishing is catch and release. A Florida study found the economic benefit of a single bonefish to be approximately $3,500 per year, that totals to almost $75,000 for the average lifespan.
