Bahamas Trip Report

I returned from the Bahamas Saturday night and can't say enough about the fishing, the lodge and the guides!  We flew into Nassau last Sunday and were at the lodge by 4pm after taking a small prop plane from Nassau to Fresh Creek, Andros.  The rooms were great and I couldn't wait to be on the flats the next day.  We fished for bones and got shots at tarpon, barracuda and sharks as well.  One my first day I had the privilege to hook into two tarpon over 100 lbs, but unfortunately the battles didn't last long before my hooks straightened out.  D&H will be running trips down to the Andros Island Bonefish club every March and are even talking about starting a November trip as well!

Barracuda are all over the flats

Sunday in the Field

Headed down to Shags Run today to host and help guide a small group.  Rye has become a pretty dependable bird dog.  I also got to see Buck and Voodoo work.  Lots of fun to see multiple dogs work.  I always feel like I learn something from Billy.
Billy is continuing to run hunts for a few more weeks.  Contact him at 513-200-1846 if you are interested.

Northern Michigan Trout Fishing

Late last night I got back from four days fishing up on the AuSable River in Michigan. This is hands down my favorite place to go.  We took up the drift boat and did nothing but float chucking streamers tight to cover to find those big browns.  We floated the "Trophy Waters" below Mio Dam as well as the lower upper river.  It was another awesome trip back up to the mitt!

Patagonia Men's Nano Hoody

If you have been around the shop or one of the D&H staff in the last five years, you have seen us wearing and talking about the Nano Puff line from Patagonia.  Delamere & Hopkins carries this line for both men and women in vest, 1/4-zip and full zip.  We have just added the Hoody version for men because the color is a home run.

Delamere & Hopkins now carries Korkers Wading boots!

We were really excited to get our first Korkers shipment in today.  We now carry the Devils Canyon boots.  These come standard with the BOA lacing system as well as two interchangeable soles, a felt and a rubber, which allow you to adapt to any situation that you get in to.  You no longer have to make the tough decision of whether you want rubber or felt, especially with all of this talk of banning felt soles in some states.  It is almost like getting two boots for the price of one!

My Favorite Fly Tying Materials

Over the past few months I've been tying quite a few flies and they all tend to have the the same few materials.  You can tie flies for any fish with these few basic materials; hooks, thread, flash, Saddle hackle and BUCKTAIL.  Bucktail is one of the most versatile materials and makes the best flies for bass, trout, musky and any other species you can think of.  Below are some materials I use a lot of and some flies I've tied lately.

Mad River Fishing Report 3/7/15

I got out this past weekend to float the Mad River in a drift boat.  It was a fun first experience.  I floated it with my buddy Lou.  He knows the Mad better than anyone, so it was fun to fish with him and listen to all of his fish stories and knowledge.

Cumberland River Trout Fishing Report

Rainbow, brown, and brook trout numbers are increasing in number and size in the Cumberland River below Lake Cumberland, making the river Bluegrass State’s top destination for a spring fishing trip according to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Rainbow and brown trout in the Cumberland River didn’t fair well during the drawdown of Lake Cumberland to repair Wolf Creek Dam when releases of cold water slowed to a trickle in summer. However, the world class trout fishery has begun a great comeback with the return of normal water levels in Lake Cumberland and the consequent higher flow into the river.
“We have more 12- to 15-inch rainbows in the Cumberland River than we have since 2007,” said Dave Dreves, fisheries research biologist for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. The brown trout in the Cumberland are also doing much better and this fishery should improve markedly in the future. “We have many 11- to 12-inch brown trout in the river right now and a good chunk of 13 to 15 inchers,” Dreves explained. “There will be some good fishing over the next few years for these species.”
The brook trout stockings in the Cumberland River that began in 2011 with 11,000 fish are an unqualified success with two new state record fish caught last year. As brook trout grow and prosper in the Cumberland River, this state record will likely fall again multiple times over the next several years.
A printable version of the 2015 Kentucky Fishing Forecast is available on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ webpage at fw.ky.gov.

Montana Snow Reports

A tributary to the Ruby

Goods winters in Montana lead to good fishing seasons.  The snow pack is incredibly important to the summer and fall fishing seasons.  The snow pack dictates the effect irrigation will have on the streams come summer and fall, as well as many other environmental conditions.
