New Tying Bench

      The other guys and I noticed that Ted was tying his flies on what amounted to a stool for a six year old. After I tied a fly or two at his place, I knew he needed a better option.  He couldn't find anything that quite caught his eye, so I decided to build him a new desk.  First time I'd built anything like this.  Didn't turn out half bad.

        D&H is always getting new flies and materials to keep things interesting. With the high water its a great time to start tying some new flies and trying out new materials. We just unpacked a couple shipments with a couple new things and some things we have been out of.

Bahamas Trip Report

      I returned from the Bahamas Saturday night and can't say enough about the fishing, the lodge and the guides!  We flew into Nassau last Sunday and were at the lodge by 4pm after taking a small prop plane from Nassau to Fresh Creek, Andros.  The rooms were great and I couldn't wait to be on the flats the next day.  We fished for bones and got shots at tarpon, barracuda and sharks as well.  One my first day I had the privilege to hook into two tarpon over 100 lbs, but unfortunately the battles didn't last long before my hooks straightened out.  D&H will be running trips down to the Andros Island Bonefish club every March and are even talking about starting a November trip as well!

My Favorite Fly Tying Materials

      Over the past few months I've been tying quite a few flies and they all tend to have the the same few materials.  You can tie flies for any fish with these few basic materials; hooks, thread, flash, Saddle hackle and BUCKTAIL.  Bucktail is one of the most versatile materials and makes the best flies for bass, trout, musky and any other species you can think of.  Below are some materials I use a lot of and some flies I've tied lately.

My Sunday - Hunting & Tying

   Despite the snow, my Dad and I decided to go out and do some bird hunting.  We had this day on the calendar for a while and didn't want to re-schedule.  It ended up being one of the most exciting hunts I've had.  Since the snow was a little frozen on the top, the birds couldn't burrow like they would have liked and they did a lot of running and moving around.  We hunted Mike, who is a Shags Run setter and he did great.  Mike has a great nose, listens well and tracked the birds fantastically. After the cold morning, I came home and continued to stock my spring fly box with some bait-fish patterns for the Hybrid Bass.  It was a good day.  Enjoy the pictures!

Hybrid Party 2015 - March 26, 6-8 p.m.

   

       D&H had a great time with our customers at last years Hybrid party. We view this event as an opportunity to give instruction on fly tying and fishing for hybrid striped bass as well as a chance to learn more about other local fishing opportunities and just to celebrate a new fishing season. All tying supplies will be 10% off during the party.

       The double deceiver is a go-to fly for all of us at D&H on The Little Miami river for hybrid striped bass and Small mouth.  This fly is very effective for hybrids, small mouth and other fish with a large appetite.

Introduction to Fly Tying      

 Join us this winter to learn how to tie flies. We will have three sessions, each lasts three weeks and meets once a week. The first session will be December 3, 10 and 17.  The second session will be January 9, 16 and 23.  The third session will be February 13, 20 and 27.

This class will give you a solid foundation of fly tying.  We will talk about the different tools, materials, hooks and techniques.  This knowledge will be used to construct three different types of flies, each utilizing different techniques.  We will tie streamers, nymphs and dry flies.  The proper way to fish each pattern will also be discussed.  Upon class completion, you will be able to use fly recipes to tie many common flies.  All materials and tools must be provided by the student.  Classes will be limited to five students.

The cost is $75.00 per student.  The class will span three 1-1/2 hour sessions.

    

Private Fly Tying Classes

            From beginners to seasoned fly tiers, if you want to improve your technique on a one-on-one level , this class is for you.  Advanced techniques and proper form will be taught by an expert fly tier.  Students may pick the patterns they wish to improve on or learn.  This is a perfect way to get ready for the next adventure.

           

Instruction possibilities include:

            -Local Water Flies

            -Bass Flies: deer hair or other

            -Foam Body Flies

            -Trout Flies

            -Saltwater Flies

            -Steelhead and Salmon Flies

            -fill your box for your next big trip

Dates and times may be scheduled by request.

The cost is $45.00 per hour.  One and two hour classes are available.  All tools and materials must be provided by the student.

New Fly Tying Material at D&H!!

         The shop has been getting in a good amount of new streamer materials and I thought we would let you know exactly what we got in.  The different streamer materials are new flashes and a couple of different modern chenilles.  Delamere & Hopkins is now a Gamakatsu hook dealer and we are stocking the B-10S and the SC-15 in all sizes 2/0 - 4.

Winter Fly Tying Classes

You're invited....

        Join us this winter to learn how to tie flies. We will have two sessions, each lasts three weeks and meets once a week. The first session will be December 6, 13,20. Second Session will be January 3,10,17. We will also likely open up a February session. The class costs $75.00. The first class will focus on Woolly Buggers and similar streamers. The second class will focus on nymphs and students will learn to tie the Prince nymph. The third class will focus on dry fly construction and tying techniques.
       Private and customer tying lessons are also available. These classes can focus on anything you want to learn to tie from dry flies to articulated streamers.
