Thomas & Thomas is Back...

  

     You may have noticed in the last few blog posts the new T&T rods we've been trying out. Well, we liked what we saw and decided to bring a few of these rods into the shop. These are truly a new generation of Thomas & Thomas rods.

Great Gear for the Money

     Technology is a wonderful thing.  It has made our phones, computers, and cars better albeit more expensive. Fly fishing is no exception.  Technology has made the best fly gear much better. The sealed drag reels, fast action rods, and braided core lines are ideas our predecessors could only dream of. We've come a long way from fiberglass "Wonder rods" and "Fin-Nor Wedding Cake" reels! Of course this all comes at a price.
    The good news is all of this technology, R&D, and design has helped create some wonderful, price conscious gear. Here are a few of our favorites, just in time for our local fishing season to begin:

Rods

    St. Croix has always been our pick for mid-price rods.  They do a great job producing U.S. manufactured rods for a variety of uses.  We teach our schools using the St. Croix Imperial ($250 for a 9' #6).  This is a medium action rod with plenty of finesse in the lower weights for trout fishing and enough backbone in 6 weights and up for any kind of warm-water fishing.  As you can tell from the picture below, this rod comes about anyway you want it.

Hybrid Party Specials

Start your Season Right! A few Great Upland Products

  I've been lucky enough to get out a few days already this year, birds aren't quite here but it is a great time to be outside. I think I've got a pretty good system worked out for myself but we get lots of questions this time of year about gear. Here are a few new ones and few I couldn't do without.

Filson Mesh Game Vest
  Anybody who has read my blogs or hunted with me won't be surprised by this one. I got one of these when they first came out and have not been disappointed. It is lightweight, breathes well, and holds most of what I need for each outing.

We also have plenty of options for those who prefer full vest, jackets, and tin cloth strap vests.

Warm water flies and materials

        D&H is always getting new flies and materials to keep things interesting. With the high water its a great time to start tying some new flies and trying out new materials. We just unpacked a couple shipments with a couple new things and some things we have been out of.

Just in Time for Father's Day... Stanley Products and Others

   We have been looking forward to this shipment for a while. Most of the guys in the shop have been using various Stanley Thermos's and mugs for some time. They are easy to use and clean and a great product. We brought in five models to start out. Click "Read More" to see what came in!

Bahamas Trip Report

      I returned from the Bahamas Saturday night and can't say enough about the fishing, the lodge and the guides!  We flew into Nassau last Sunday and were at the lodge by 4pm after taking a small prop plane from Nassau to Fresh Creek, Andros.  The rooms were great and I couldn't wait to be on the flats the next day.  We fished for bones and got shots at tarpon, barracuda and sharks as well.  One my first day I had the privilege to hook into two tarpon over 100 lbs, but unfortunately the battles didn't last long before my hooks straightened out.  D&H will be running trips down to the Andros Island Bonefish club every March and are even talking about starting a November trip as well!

My Sunday - Hunting & Tying

   Despite the snow, my Dad and I decided to go out and do some bird hunting.  We had this day on the calendar for a while and didn't want to re-schedule.  It ended up being one of the most exciting hunts I've had.  Since the snow was a little frozen on the top, the birds couldn't burrow like they would have liked and they did a lot of running and moving around.  We hunted Mike, who is a Shags Run setter and he did great.  Mike has a great nose, listens well and tracked the birds fantastically. After the cold morning, I came home and continued to stock my spring fly box with some bait-fish patterns for the Hybrid Bass.  It was a good day.  Enjoy the pictures!

Filson Westlake Jacket

  We just received a full size run (S-XXL) of the Filson Westlake jacket.  This piece has been a very popular piece for us.  It is a mid-weight, water repellent, flannel lined jacket.  Perfect for all, but the coldest Cincinnati days.  Filson updated the fit and added several pockets (including an inner security pocket) to make this jacket at home either in a bar in OTR or underneath a strap vest at Shags Run.
