A few new Fishing Titles

   In addition to the large shipment of hunting books we received, we also got a bunch of new fishing books that cover everything from traditional small stream trout fishing to carp and saltwater fishing. Here are a few of the new ones:

Rivers of Sand: Fly fishing Michigan and the Great Lakes Region

 

       For all the Cincinnati folks that call some part of Michigan, home away from home, this is a good read.  The author, Josh Greenberg, is the owner of Gates Au Sable Lodge on the Au Sable river near Grayling.  Josh grew up fishing on the Au Sable and later working for Gates Lodge before owning the lodge.  Even just reading the introduction, the reader senses the deep love and respect he has for the Northern Lower Peninsula and the waters nearby.  This book is a mix of fishing know-how and good storytelling. 

Brookville Fishing Report

          I finally got out to Brookville Tailwaters for the first time in two months.  It was packed because it was the trout opener.  The water dropped from 3.7ft down to 2.9ft while we were over there.  It rained HARD all day.

new fly just arrived: Umpqua Bushwacker

    I was going through the Umpqua catalog and saw a fly that I thought looked like one of the best small baitfish patterns I had seen in a while. Sometimes flies are glorified in catalogs, but this one was exactly what I had hoped. We have it in Chartreuse/White and Tan/White and might be getting this fly in a few more colors with our next order, get 'em while they last!

There are a couple reasons I really like this fly. The first reason is the hook shape, the hook is a worm hook used by conventional fisherman. This hook has the ability the hook fish easily and remain weedless at the same time. The second reason I really like this fly is the shape.  As you can imagine, I'm pretty picky about my flies and the profile on this fly is great.

New Books at D&H!!

    We just got several large shipments of new books, as well as some of our favorites.  Opening these boxes has been a bit like Christmas morning for me.  Over the next few weeks I will try to highlight some of the new books that came in.

Jack O'Connor- The Legendary Life of America's Greatest Gunwriter

     This biography of Jack O'Connor is a must for serious gun nuts and hunters alike.  O'Connor was a staple within the pages of Outdoor Life for many years as Gun Editor.  This book follows the path of adventure from his early childhood in rural Arizona to his many years of writing and hunting for OL.  Of course, the book spends some time on sheep hunting and O'Connors' love of the Winchester Model 70 and Winchester .270.

Come fish the South Holston!! May 26-29

   Join us as we fish the South Holston, one of the best 
tailwaters in the East.

    We will be visiting Tennessee’s South Holston River to experience some of the best trout fishing in the East.  The South Holston River Lodge will be our host as we fish this iconic tailwater near Bristol, TN.  Luke Sedacca will host this spring trip.

   

ITINERARY for the May 26-29, 2015 trip

Tuesday: Drive to Bristol, Tennessee, settle in, some late afternoon fishing may be possible, dinner and drinks, and develop a game plan for the next few days.

Wednesday, Thursday: Breakfast, 2 days of guided fishing, hearty fishing lunch, dinner and drinks in the evening. 

Friday: Pack up and return home

new shipment of books: Great Smoky Mountains

Fly fishing in the Smoky Mountains is tons of fun and something every Cincinnati angler should experience.  There are larger rivers and very small mountain streams.  The waterfalls, trails and fish make this a great experience.

The shop just received a large shipment of one of our favorite books:
Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by Jim Casada.  We have both hardbound and softbound versions.  The hardbound are signed by the author.

First Hybrid

 As you all know, hybrid striped bass are a favorite here at the shop and it is about that time of the year. Since we have been getting the classic Cincinnati spring rain, it has made getting out and fishing that much harder.  There was one day last week where a few guys were able to get out and it paid off.  The flows were probably around 1100 CFS, which is a bit higher than we like.  Even with the high water, Ted caught a nice 9.5 pound picture perfect hybrid!  It was a great fish to start out the season!

New Columbia PFG Shirts Have Arrived

 

The Bahama II shirt has become a staple everywhere from tropical flats to Midwest smallmouth streams and college campuses.

     D&H just received a spring shipment in from Columbia.  The Bahama shirts have a great reputation for keeping us cool and comfortable in the sun.  Check out some of the new colors and styles that are sure to be hits this summer.
